You need to add “Kill” to your list of Bushido movies, its a great film.

  • admin:

Thank you Jon for your recommendation! I have added the movie Kill to the list. Haven’t seen it yet and I am looking forward to watching it. :)

  • Rhi:

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a question I have. About 5 years ago I watched my first old samurai movie, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called, who it was by, or the majority of what happened. Since then I’ve watched many more movies so i occassionally think I’ve remembered something but turns out it was something else. I’m fairly sure it wasn’t a kurusawa movie, i think we discovered him after the movie I’m after. I have half a feeling that the director either didnt make many, or even any other movies in this genre.

What I can say is it was a slow burner. Not a great deal of action but a quality movie which pulled you in and had you hooked before you knew it. By the end, the slower start and perhaps slower pace throughout made sense and you wouldn’t want it any other way.

It is filmed in b&w, and centered around one samurai (although there may be a few other key players, I don’t think it had a very large cast). I remember a scene towards the end, of him sat outside a hut, I think it was a womans who he had return to, either through obligation or love. It was alone, very dusty underfoot and on a slight hill.

There is a possibility he was a ronin, but the story was a stripped down study, there was very little romantising of the samurai way of life.

So other than being a needle in a haystack, any ideas?

  • admin:

    Hi there Rhi,

It is a case of a needle in a Haystack. I dont think I can remember a movie like that. “Harakiri” is also a very slow paced movie. I don’t think the above mentioned list helped you either?

I will be looking out for your described scene’s when I am watching…

    Any other ideas out there?

    Bruce

  • Rhi:

Many thanks Bruce for your reply, I’m not sure that it’s the one but I’m about to watch it so I will let you know!

    thanks

  • admin:

Sorry for the late repoly I was abroad, thnx for the ad will be adding the movie to the list!

  • Chuck P:

I suggest you add the other films of Hideo Gosha, specifically Hunter in the Dark and Bandits vs Samurai Squadron to your list. Both are unacknowledged classics that deserve more attention among the annals of Samurai Films.

Like Sword of Doom, there is a wild nihilistic edge to these films, since Tatsuya Nakadai starred in both.

  • admin:

Thanks Chuck! Will be adding it to the list! And will let you know what I think of them!

  • George Fargis:

I would like help from a knowlegeable samurai movie fan. I am trying to identify a Japanese movie I recall seeing about 50 years ago. It was in black ans white. I think it started off with a lone samurai (a ronin?) walking down a road. There is a princess in the movie, but it is not revealed until close to the end of the movie that he is also royalty. It was a long movie with a great battle at the end that must last at least twenty minutes. I think Toshiro Mifune may have played the samurai. The plot does not sound like any of the better known Mifune/Kirosawa movies. Can anyone identify this movie?

  • Hey there George,

I remember a BW movie with Mifune as a ronin in a forrest setting. I think it was Rashomon… Check that one out.

  • paul:

Here a few more to add to your list, “Ame Agaru” by Koizumi Takashi, “Bakumatsu” by Daisuke Ito, “Gojoe” by Sogo Ishii, “Goyokin” by Gosha Hideo, “Hana Yori mo Naho” by Hirokazu Koreeda, “The Magoichi Saga” by Kenji Misumi,”Ronin Gai” by Kazuo Kuroki, “Tsukigami” by Yasuo Furuhato these are just afew to start with should you want some real oldies I’ll drop another post with those titles.

a few years a go, i watched this movie about a samurai father. he has this daughter whom he has to kill because she bore the child of this demon who was supposed to be reborn (he has this spider mark on his head). this is already kind of a curse hand down.

could you please help me find this movie?

  • Dane:

Hi Admin, I love your site and the movie lists. I will check out some of the few movies I missed that are highly rated, Thanks.. I am looking for help identifying an old B&W Samurai movie I saw as a kid and have not seen since (and I am 50ish). All I remember is part of the movie they are on a dirt road and there is a fight with many people at one time, but the narrator would whisper as himself (in English) that the skill and art of killing someone was to cut their jugular in one slice, as the blood left their body, it would sound like the rush of the winds. I don’t remember the main actor. Any ideas from anyone would be helpful. I have been looking for years for this movie.

  • CWS..:

    Greetings:

There are two movies that should be added to your site:

    Hi there CWS,

I will add them this month , thanks for for the titles…

    Dewa mata

  • Martin D:

    Hi There

Another request for a long forgotten film ! The premise was that this young sword master started life as a professional conman – who pretended to be a great master and challenged real sword masters to duels, but never had any intention of drawing his sword. As the conman met a real hero, the hero – being unable to see any intention in the conmans eyes – assumed the conman was the greatest swordsman ever, and went on to adopt him as his protege. Lots of rescuing villages and ladies followed !

I think it’s a later film (in colour and perhaps the last 20 years)

    Any thoughts please?!

    Thanks

  • admin:

    Hey There Martin,

It seems we have another Title Search, I dont recall seeing a bushido movie with that plot. Would you mind posting that request at my search for title page?

also, this modern ninja movie features a war

    Shinobi: heart under blade -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHTf1dHz9UI

  • Chuck P:

Hi aj—I believe the movie you’re referring to is Heaven and Earth, which isn’t a Kurosawa movie but does remind one of Kagamusha….

Martin, the movie you’re describing reminds me a lot of After the Rain–which was written by Kurosawa but he handed the directing reins to his longtime assistant director who did it after the master’s death.

The sensei who is first challenged then takes the thief as his protege is played by the great Tatsuya Nakadai.
